Y’all made me feel really good about myself commenting that I looked younger. I’ve been very focused on my skin the past couple years and have been doing A LOT to maintain some youthfulness- some of it “clean beauty” some just straight up toxins injected into my face :). It’s a balance, ladies.

Here is my full routine and I discuss more below- but you can click on most of these for links:

SKINCARE:

I have ride or die favorites I have been using forever- including the Tammy Fender face wash and EpiPeel as well as Roche Posay sunscreens, Follain mask and prescription retinol. I was a die-hard Augustinus Bader Rich Cream junkie but have found that this INN Beauty cream is a really close dupe and way less money (don’t worry I’m still spending stupid money on my skincare, just wait…) New favorites include this SkinCeuticals night eye cream, Fig. 1 Vitamin CE Ferulic (better version and less $$$ than SkinCeuticals) and this Paula’s Choice liquid exfoliant. As for those little capsules I use day and night…

GADGETS/ TOOLS:

I went to see my dermatologist, who is a great friend of mine as well, and she was looking at my skin (skin cancer checks every year, no skipping!) and she said “Your skin looks amazing what are you doing?” The only thing I’ve added to my routine in the past 3 months (she sees me often) was the Droplette. I was sent it to try and to be honest I thought it was a total gimmick. But I got the stem cell capsules (so expensive) as well as the collagen ones and IT WORKS. I don’t know how or why but something with NASA and MIT and whatever it is, I’m into it. I mentioned it to my derm and she said she had heard of it and the science behind it is legit- so I will stick with it. Also legit, red light LED masks if you use them EVERY DAY. I use mine almost every night, 2-3 cycles. I also use my gua sha in the morning, especially if I’ve been clenching my jaw at night! Feels so good.

PROCEDURES:

Creams can only go so far. Like I said, I see a trusted, award-winning medical dermatologist for ALL procedures. Shout out to SkinCare Physicians in Chestnut Hill, MA. You have to be very careful with medspas and make sure the people treating you have proper qualifications. That said, no gatekeeping here- this is what I do:

  • I metabolize Botox so fast- like 4-5 weeks and it wears off so I switched to Daxxify and it lasts a lot longer. I get injections in my masseter muscles for TMJ which has also slimmed out my face, my “11’s” (between my brows) and occasionally along my upper lip (I have a top lip that flips under when I smile and this makes it look fuller- they cal this a “lip flip” injection)
  • I’ve lost a lot of volume in my cheeks from age, weight fluctuations, stress, etc so I get Juvederm in my cheekbone area to add some natural volume. My doc is very conservative and refuses to do anything that looks fake and I love that about her. I tried lip filler once and hated it, so got it dissolved. I have some left in my lower lip a bit, but it was a “hydration” low dose, not a volume dose.
  • Once a year I get Fraxel- I’ve only done it twice but I will go again this fall (not looking forward to it, TBH). On top of evening out your skin tone and reducing wrinkles, it helps ward off skin cancer as well- it’s actually preventative! Skin cancer runs in my family so I do love this side effect of it. This year I tried Thermage on my lower face/ neck that was showing some laxity and I LOVE IT. Doesn’t hurt and it actually did tighten up my neck!

And that’s all she wrote. Let me know if you have products, gadgets or procedures you love! I’m all ears (and so is everyone else!).

Fashion Friday: My Skincare & Makeup Routine https://elementsofstyleblog.com/fashion-friday-my-skincare-makeup-routine/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/fashion-friday-my-skincare-makeup-routine/#comments Fri, 09 Feb 2024 17:38:06 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=54009 I get a lot of questions about skincare and makeup on Instagram, so I thought I would put everything here in one place to reference.

I am no 16 step skincare regime gal, but I do have favorites I use consistently and I think have improved my skin as I age:

SKINCARE

Morning:

A splash of cold water and a vitamin C serum to start, followed by a light moisturizer and this tinted sunscreen I wear every single day no matter what (otherwise what’s the point of doing lasers and stuff- more on that later). I use this eye cream (expensive but lasts forever) and layer this tinted eye sunscreen over it (I’m not big on hats so sunscreen is a serious must.)

Evening:

I love a good oil cleanser and this one smells like orange zest which I love. For a creamier/ milky cleanser I like this Tammy Fender one a lot too. Then I do my prescription Retin-A (if I run out I use this Drunk Elephant one that really works). I alternate nights of Retin-A and this Faded cream for discoloration which I really like too (you are not supposed to use together). Then I slather on the hideously expensive but SO GOOD Bader Rich cream and this eye cream. Once a week I may use the Dennis Gross peel pads or a stronger physical exfoliator like the Tammy Fender Epi Peel.

And every night I use my red light mask for 10 minutes. Not sure HOW much that contributes, but I think it helps somewhat.

MAKEUP:

For makeup I have a few ride or die items and then some new faves I’ve been using!

I started using a primer and it does help my makeup stay. I also have been mixing in some Saie liquid highlighter to my foundation if I’m feeling a little sallow. For foundation I am currently obsessed with the new RMS one– I have two shades as I’m in between two- 22 (paler) and 33.5 (warmer). If I self tan or get a little sun, I use 33.5 on its own. It’s clean, great coverage and doesn’t feel heavy. Concealer is where I buy a billion things to try for the perfect one- this Mercier one is fantastic to brighten and conceal and easy to toss in your purse. I like how skinny the tip is too. I always have a Cle de Peau as well, but I so preferred the old formula to the new. For drugstore brands, this one can’t be beat! I set my concealer with this brightening powder (I don’t like to powder my whole face).

The I go in with this amazing contour/ bronzing stick in Copper from Ogee I love. Just a swipe under each cheekbone, a dot on the nose and forehead too and blend with a brush. For cream blush I like the Rare Beauty one, for powder blush I’m loving RMS– it’s got some shimmer/ glow to it but not glitter. For a little glow a dab of RMS Living Luminizer. Oh, and I forgot, if I need some all over color- the Bobbi Brown Bronze Brick. Like, that’s a desert island items because I use on my eyes for shadow sometimes too.

Speaking of eyes, I do have a few “lewks” LOL, but my basic is always involving the Tarte Bloom palette and these Tillbury cream shadows that are SO gorgeous and glowy. For liner I like a cake liner best with a tight angled brush like this. You wet the brush and then it goes on super thin. For a pencil I like the Victoria Beckham one in the cocoa color. I have tried a million mascaras too, and right now love the Armani Eyes to Kill as well as the Chantecaille Longest Lash best.

For lips I just use lip gloss for the most part. If doing an event I may use a stain first (this one in Rosewood) but I have about 15 glosses in each handbag and just use whichever I pull out. Faves are this (drugstore), this for plumping and this for clear hydration treatment (so good).

DERMATOLOGIST

OK, none of this would do much if I didn’t go see my dermatologist on a regular basis for touch ups. I’m 44 and things are going south at a faster clip than before! :) Because I have an expressive face and relatively fast metabolism from working out, my face EATS up Botox and filler so fast. Botox lasts maybe 8 weeks max on me and filler maybe 5-6 months. Granted my doctor is a girlfriend of mine so I don’t mind seeing her more often! I get Botox just between my eyebrows/ tiny bit in forehead and above my upper lip (I had a gummy smile until I discovered that trick!) For filler we do a decent amount in my cheekbones and medial face as I get very hallow/ long without it. Also some in my nasolabial folds. Recently I got a couple drops in my undereyes and I think it’s helped me look less tired. I tried my lips once, but hated it and had it dissolved immediately.

In the past year I got a full Fraxel Dual treatment that hurt like HOLY HELL (see my “Wellness” highlights for blow by blow with heinous pics), but did even out my skin a lot! I’ll probably suck it up and do it once a year. Interested in Thermage next. Because I’m a crazy person who is apparently much more afraid of aging than I thought.

So there ya have it. All the things! Any questions? Recommendations? Faves? Leave in comments!

2022 Faves: Beauty, Fitness & Books https://elementsofstyleblog.com/2022-faves-beauty-fitness-books-2/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/2022-faves-beauty-fitness-books-2/#comments Tue, 03 Jan 2023 21:08:43 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=41599 OK, this took longer than expected so fashion and home faves for 2022 will have to wait, but here are my favorite items, services, books, workouts, etc. from 2022!

Beauty

I got a lot of questions about beauty products and routines last year, and I’ve whittled down my favorite products here in one spot. I have some real faves now heading into 2023. Still looking for that magic eye cream though! Images linked in collage or below:

Cleansers: I love this Vitamin B oil cleanser (takes off everything) followed by this foaming cleanser. If I feel really dry I skip the second step.  This Zo exfoliator is SO good for weekly scrubs.

Moisturizers: I tried out this Zo Brightalive thanks to The Look & Co who suggested this line on IG, and I liked it so much I reordered (rare). I also love this face oil (I use it with a gua sha tool and it feels so awesome) and now can’t live without this sunscreen daily. And I love this Follain mask- it’s SO good!

Makeup: This Nars foundation is my go to (with this Make Up Forever tinted moisturizer on weekends), as is the Cle de Peau (although I preferred the old formula to the new one). My new FAVE find was the Rare Beauty liquid blush (it STAYS!).  I reordered both my fave Charlotte Tillbury cream eyeshadows again (Amber Gold, Oyster Pearl) and ahve to admit after having a tube that lasted for a good 6 months, this Chantecaille mascara- while absurdly priced) is the one I reach for the most by far.  For lips my go to this year was this Dior stain in Rosewood with their lip oil over it in Mahogany.

For dermatology services, as I’ve mentioned before, I see Dr. Brooke Sikora at Skincare Physicians in Chestnut Hill. She is also a dear friend, so I trust her implicitly to help me look my best without making me look dumb. The best thing I did this year was Quick Recovery Fraxel “Baby Fraxel” if you will. It made me realize how amazing the full force regular Fraxel will be and so I’m doing that in 2023 at some point. All those years baking in the sun have caught up to me, and it really helped with hyperpigmentation. She also does a little Botox (jaw muscles for TMJ/ overdeveloped masseter muscles, between eyebrows and above upper lip) and filler (cheekbone area). I tried microneedling this year twice at a spa, and to me it’s not worth the money. I’d rather use it for lasers- much better result.  For special events, I do love the medical grade hydrafacials with dermaplaning  (for locals, I see Maria at Bella Sante) – they really do make you look super plump and hydrated for a few days and exfoliate everything well.

Fitness and Health

In 2022 I got into the best shape of my life, but also got hit with my first real injury (bulging disc at my C6 vertebrae and also found mild arthritis through my neck). So I also had a setback and learned some things about my body. As I go through physical therapy and acupuncture (which is helping) to try to get back in fighting form, I’m also modifying my workouts to be a little less high impact.  Previously I was doing a lot of running, HIIT and weights. I still like a good run now and then, but am doing much more hiking on my favorite workout equipment/app ever, the Peloton Tread. I barely ride the bike anymore because I never really LIKED spinning, but the hiking classes are FIRE. Literally. My output numbers are higher than running and I sweat as much and it feels better on my joints. I also love the hiking and running bootcamps, strength classes, yoga, barre… big fan basically. My handle is @eringates1979 if you wanna be workout buds.

Apps I also use and like: Wilma Fit (strength training), Melissa Wood Health (pilates) and am going to try out Evlo Fitness (interested in her gentle eon the joints but hard on the muscles method).

For workout cloths, my ride or die leggings are Alo Airlift or Airbrush or Lndr for compression/ thicker style. I have this Athleta top is four colors, and these sneakers in 3 colors. And I finally found resistance bands that don’t slip around!

On a deeper level, I’ve been cleaning up my diet, trying to eat a bit less gluten and sugar, more protein, fiber and whole foods. But I do not deny myself if I’m craving something specific, I tend to think that’s my body telling me it needs something. Oh, and I have to admit that having the #influencerstandard  40 oz Stanley water bottle at home and one at work has increased my water intake tenfold. Something about the straw makes me drink more! And, as I mentioned on IG, I’m working with a functional MD to test my system for inflammation and hormone imbalances and do a little deep dive into how things are looking. I’ve felt a little “off” the past 6 months, and it’s probably stress related, but I want to make sure and work with her to find natural ways to cope with stress while staying on my medications- because I need them. End of story. :) Oh, and I hope to try out an infrared sauna this year- I hate regular saunas but this sounds like it might be good for me?

Books

I read A LOT. It is the only way to quiet my mind. Here are some of my favorite reads of 2022. Currently reading The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck and already have underlined half the pages.

Fashion Friday: Introducing Beauty Pie https://elementsofstyleblog.com/fashion-friday-introducing-beauty-pie/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/fashion-friday-introducing-beauty-pie/#comments Fri, 18 Mar 2022 15:40:46 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=41062

The people from BeautyPie reached out to me recently to ask if I was interested in trying their subscription based product line, created by Marcia Kilgore who hit it big with her famous Bliss brand years ago. I had heard of them but had not tried, so I immediately said yes. Basically, they cut out all the extra costs associated with luxury skincare and beauty, allowing you to buy products made int he same places as some of your favorite high priced products (read more about their pricing transparency here).

You know me, if I didn’t truly believe in a brand or product, even if they sent me things to try for free, I would not post about them.  It’s been my rule since starting this blog. The pricing on these products is mind blowing! I’ve found some real faves I’ve reordered already.  So sign up for a membership here and use the code ERINGATESSENTME to get $10 off your first order!

Here are my Beauty Pie favorites!

  1. Both these palettes are great- the pale shades are a tad glittery so I use a more matte lighter shade for daytime and the shimmer for evening, but the other colors are all fab too. Slim little compact perfect for packing.
  2. This under eye brightener is amazing- for those REALLY tough mornings it really perks up dark circles!
  3. The Clean House candle smells like fresh laundry and is great for bedrooms where you don’t want super heavy fragrances.
  4. A smooth dark brown eyeliner that has real staying power.
  5. Since I started using this hylaronic acid serum my winter dryness is GONE. great for on top of your retinols.
  6. I rarely use liquid liner, but when I want a dramatic cat eye look, this pen is SO easy!
  7. I have this gloss is two colors- not sticky, nice and moisturizing and just a hint of color.
  8. On my second bottle of this detox shampoo– I like it better than scalp scrubs! I use it 1-2x a week when my hair feels really loaded up with dry shampoo.
  9. This cream blush is a good one- I’ve struggled to find one I like- this goes on SO easily and blends out with minimal effort. Love the Sexy Berry color.
  10. This bronzing mousse gives comparable color to other much pricier brands- I use the dark color with a light hand and it makes me look so much healthier. As with all tinted mousse- white sheets beware though! :)
  11. This body cream is DELICIOUS. Like, I want to eat it it smells so good! Rich without being greasy, I love putting it on before bed.
  12. These silk mini scrunchies are my new fave for when I wash my hair or even putting my hair in a bun as they don’t pull as much.
  13. I’ve only used this night cream for a couple weeks, but I love how this feels and moisturizes my skin at night!

Everyday Beauty Items with Saks https://elementsofstyleblog.com/everyday-beauty-items-with-saks/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/everyday-beauty-items-with-saks/#comments Fri, 25 Feb 2022 18:17:23 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=41033

Lately I’ve been getting a lot of questions about my day to day makeup and skincare routine and coincidentally Saks Fifth Avenue asked me to partner with them on a beauty post so the timing could not be better, as they sell so many of the things I love. So here is a roundup of most of the products I use every day- from a splurge worthy moisturizer to the two foundations I’ve been using on heavy rotation and even the hand wash I keep in almost every bathroom I love the smell so much.  Click the images below for links– explanations of why I love these items below!

FOUNDATION: I have been using both this Dior and new Nars foundation the most lately. Both are medium coverage with a little glow but not “shiny”.

CONCEALER: Cle de Peau has a cult following for a reason. It covers great, has just enough moisture and lasts.

BROW PENCIL: The best ever. I actually buy these in multiples so I’m never without one.

FRAGRANCE: I love how Santal smells a little different on everyone. It’s super unique, and you either really love it or you don’t.

EYE CREAM: I use this one all the time when my undereye area feels really dry- best to use at night over your retinol.

INVESTMENT CREAM: I’m on my third bottle of the Rich Cream and I have to say, nothing quite moisturizes like it. It feels like heaven, and I can tell when I stop using it.

BLUSH: I have about 15 blushes, but I come back to BB’s “Slopes” often for it’s not too pink, not too brown flush.

EYE QUAD: When I travel, eye quads are where it’s at- this one ( “Nude Dip”) can be really natural and light or built up to a good smokey eye!

BRONZER: Another can’t like without it product- glowy but not glittery and always the perfect sunkissed shade.

LIP COLOR: I don’t own a single lipstick. Only gloss or tinted balms. Dior’s new Mahogany color is PERFECTION- I have it in this tinted balm but also the Lip Maximizer and Oil (both sold out right now everywhere).

MASCARA: I was influenced into trying this very expensive mascara and I have to say, I do think it helps lash growth and health and never clumps. Natural but full lashes.

EYELINER: I use a waterproof pencil to lightly line the corers of the upper lids and then smudge outwares with an angled brush. Then I line the inside lower waterline.

HANDWASH: I mean, it’s now such a big part of our routine, I’ve upgraded throughout the house to this Aesop one because the scent is divine. And I got the hand sanitizer too for the same reason.

NAILS: I love this tinted nail polish/ treatment because I never get my nails done- I don’t have time and they chip too fast. This makes them look polished and healthy in one coat!

Fashion Friday: My Haircare and Styling Routine https://elementsofstyleblog.com/fashion-friday-my-haircare-and-styling-routine/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/fashion-friday-my-haircare-and-styling-routine/#comments Fri, 11 Feb 2022 15:37:02 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=41007

First off, I have to say that I was reasonably blessed in the hair genetics department. My mom has always had crazy thick, wavy hair, and I inherited that. But when I was little I HATED how thick my hair was. It always felt so heavy and cumbersome- that is after I grew out my middle school mullet (yikes).  Bobs just resulted in a triangle of hair.  I made the unfortunate choice to get a spiral perm once or twice in the early 90’s.  I also went the mall in college and got the shaggy “Meg Ryan in You’ve Got Mail” style (terrible on non-pixie like blondes, lemme tell you). Basically, I fought it and tried to make my hair something it wasn’t. In adulthood I’ve embraced the wavy texture, but also like that I can blow it out straight. I’ve kept it longer lately, but am sure I’ll cut it again. But there is one thing I know for sure- there is a lot of emotion tied to women’s hair.

I’ve had a few instances of extreme stress and hormonal shifts causing excessive shedding and letting it really affect my self esteem (event hough no one else could tell a thing, I felt like I was on the verge of going bald). Basically, an extreme version of a bad hair day ruining your mood.  Some variation of this happens to almost all of us at some point, especially after having a baby, and also, ya know, a global pandemic. So lately I’ve been trying to treat my hair the best I can, take supplements, add collagen powder to my morning smoothie and not heat style it too much.  And so many of you have made kind comments in my video posts about my hair and asking what I use to style it so I thought today I’d share my current routine that I’m happy with. Click images for links:

  1. I’ve been using Vegamour shampoo and conditioner for about 2 months now and I really love it. It makes my hair feel really healthy and moisturized but not weighed down.
  2.  I also have been using this foam that promotes growth- the bottle is TINY for the price, so I’m still on the fence but so far so good.
  3. When I shampoo I use this scalp massager now to promote circulation and really get all the dry shampoo outta my hair. It feels great, too.
  4. This moisturizing balm is awesome if your hair is dry. Adds a lot of shine but doesn’t feel super heavy (just don’t use too much!)
  5. I also have used this heat protection cream for years as well- one bottle lasts SO long and it also really helps with frizz and shine (and smells amazing).
  6. I’ve been taking these supplements for a few months too- my dermatologist sells them so I know they can’t be total bull :) My shedding HAS reduced and I’ve seen new growth.
  7. THE BEST round brush for drying!
  8. I tried the Dyson Airwrap and hated it, have not tried just the dryer, but this one is cheaper and dries so fast!
  9. I use a 1″ curling wand for my waves. I don’t keep each section on long so they are looser but still last.
  10. Just discovered this detox shampoo and LOVE it after a week of lots of dry shampoo. I use once a week.
  11. This dry shampoo gives the BEST volume (but does leave some white residue so you gotta tussle it for a while to get rid of the whole “founding fathers” look.
  12. When I don’t need as much volume and don’t want white residue but need to freshen up my hair I use this version.

I’ve had a few people also ask me how often I wash my hair and how I combine that with daily work outs. I wash my hair every 2-3 days. Usually I wash and dry one day, the next day use dry shampoo and restyle a bit and day 3 it’s up in a bun. Rinse and repeat, literally.  If I’ve had a particularly sweaty workout I will wash more often. You have to find a balance between washing it enough but not too much.  Too much and your hair can get damaged from all the heat styling, too little and your scalp gets build up that blocks your follicles and inhibits growth.

Last but not least, for you locals who want to know, I get my hair cut and colored by Nicholas Penna at Salon Capri (Newbury Street, Newton and Dedham locations)

Supergoop Shimmer Shade in First Light // Arcona Triad Pads // Jane Iredale eyeshadow// Neocutis Eye cream //

I was excited when I was asked to do my first ever beauty partnership post with Dermstore! I’m hardly an expert, but I do know what I like and get asked about what I use often on IG.  And since Dermstore carries a ton of my favorite brands and products, I thought it was the perfect excuse to post a bit about items I use in my routine and to try some new ones! The items I bought above are a mix of both new and old faves:

Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Self Tanning Pads (face sold out, but body available here)- these give GREAT color plus awesome skin benefits. I like them A LOT.

Supergoop eyeshadow in First Light is such a good base layer- plus it protects your delicate eyelids from sun damage. Have used this for a while! I also like this color too.

I’ve heard great things about these Arcona pads and love how clean and perked up my skins feels when I use them at night before serum and retinol.

New to Jane Iredale’s eyeshadow and I love it- so pigmented and CLEAN!

I wanted to try this Neocutis eye cream since it has great reviews and the brand comes recommended by my facialist. So far, so good!

Here are some other great items for gifting. I love getting beauty products other people love as gifts, personally.

My Health, Workout & Beauty Routines https://elementsofstyleblog.com/my-health-workout-beauty-routines/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/my-health-workout-beauty-routines/#comments Mon, 13 Sep 2021 20:05:31 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=40622

This weekend when I did my Instagram AMA (“Ask Me Anything”) I got a lot of questions about my health and workout routines (and what kind of products and procedures I use/do on my face as well!) As you know, I tend to be mostly an open book so I’m happy to share my daily routine, with the caveat that I know these kinds of things can be triggering for those with body images issues- hell, I still have body image issues. Lots of them.  As someone who was diagnosed as having body dysmorphia, I certainly do NOT see myself the way other may see me. I’m no longer struggling with an eating disorder and I work hard trying to maintain a healthy mindset, but I know how hard it can be when you are really feeling down about yourself. So please don’t take this as anything but answering some of your questions and sharing my personal favorites.  My entire family is naturally thin and tall, and I was lucky to inherit pretty decent (albeit huge and cavity riddled) teeth, hair and eyebrows from my mother, so I do acknowledge that as well (although the unibrow in middle school was a hard road to travel, let me tell you ;) )

Also, I find that all of this- beauty rituals, working out and eating well all are a part of self care and that is important in maintaining some semblance of mental health, especially now.  I am very lucky to have a nanny who works until 6pm and a husband who is happy to trade on and off with the kids so we each can work out and take time to do things that make us relaxed a little. I always end my workday with enough time to work out and spend time with my kids, and try every night to do a little something to relax- a mask and tea or wine and a bath. Big advocate over here of that kind of thing.

BEAUTY:

I do not have a crazy routine. I wash my face with a few different washes depending on how my skin is feeling (faves being Tammy Fender, Tata Harper and this Naturopathica one with the brush for winter when my skin is DRY).  I use a prescription retinol at night and have been liking this rich Neocutis face cream over it. I have yet to find an eye cream I’m obsessed with. So I have a few so-so ones now. Please share if you have a good one! Every night I use my LED mask– at first I thought it was a crock, now I’m thinking maybe there’s something to it (if I do it every night- takes 10 minutes, and makes Emma cry when I wear it and Henry think I’m an Avenger of some kind). It’s been a couple months- we’ll see. For masks, I am OBSESSED with this cheap Versed one.  Seriously gives you a lift and brightens! I also always feel better with a little faux tan, so if I use a couple drop of TanLuxe on my face and the classic standby St. Tropez mousse on my body (with the mitt!) I also will use my gua sha tool and this oil to massage my face every few days in the morning to wake it up and de-puff. Also feels great on sore jaw muscles! Speaking of sore muscles, this basic epsom salt with lavender can’t be beat for relaxation in the bath. And my newest find is this Miami Beach Bum cream- guys, I always get razor burn on my legs…. since I switched to using mens razors (they are SO much better than the ones marketed to ladies) and using this cream after- not ONE BUMP! Amazing. Even though I sort of smell like a pizza from the oregano oil. #worthit

OK, now I’ve mentioned before I do have some injectables now that I’m in my 40’s. I get Botox between my eyebrows and above my upper lip (I have a gummy smile and this keeps the top lip from flipping under) as well as in my jaw for TMJ (which has, as a side effect, slimmed my jawline significantly a la Bethenny Frankel’s before and after pics- LOL).  I also get filler in my cheeks to help with my Resting Bitchy Face lines around my mouth that make me look like I’m pissed all the time.  I also plan to get, what my doctor says is “baby Fraxel” in October as my dark spots are out of control now. She says I’m gonna LOVE it, and she knows her stuff. I’m very much on the side of doing whatever makes you feel best- no shame, no guilt. And heavily advocate for going to an actual doctor for anything injected, not a med spa/ beautician. You do NOT want injectables done in the hands of anyone not properly trained!

NUTRITION:

After 7 years of IVF hormones and pregnancies, my body is finally settling back into a “normal” balanced state.  And it feels GREAT.  I also have found that working out has become therapy to me for my anxiety (especially these days with the world one big ol’ dumpster fire) and so I’ve been hustling more than normal and more active than I’ve been in years. So right now, I’m a little thinner than I’ve been in a while as I find the balance of working out and eating. But eating well has also helped me feel better about myself too, mentally and physically. In no way do I deny myself something I’m craving (in fact I housed a Burger King Double Cheeseburger on our drive to CT this past weekend), but during the week I try to eat pretty healthy. On the weekend, all bets are off for the most part.

I start my day with a smoothie chock full of supplements and good stuff to make sure I know I get SOME goodness in my system should the whole day’s eating plan go in the crapper. I blend a cup of frozen wild Maine blueberries, handful of spinach, scoop of Athletic Greens, scoop of collagen peptides, scoop of vanilla protein, 1/2 a banana, coconut milk and the juice of half a lemon. A yummy and fast way to power up. I get a nonfat latte on the way to work and then usually have a protein bar mid-morning. For lunch, I eat a Sweetgreen salad almost every day (spinach, arugula, chicken, broccoli, carrots, beets, shaved parm, lentils and balsamic vinaigrette) I’ve been so crazy busy lately with work, workouts and the kids that I usually don’t eat again until dinner.  Which could be order in pizza or Indian or Andrew will cook up some mix of protein, carb and veggie. Oh and wine. :) Again, #moderation.

WORKOUTS:

I am so excited to be building our basement gym right now with Brookes + Hill because I’ve been riding my Peloton under a literal raincloud of fiberglass insulation that will probably kill me. :) We’ve decided we will most likely never join a gym again, so this is a great investment. We got a Peloton during COVID (as did everyone else) and while I still am not a HUGE fan of spinning, I LOVE the thing. The classes are great- running (outdoor audio or treadmill ones), biking, strength, HIIT, yoga– I try them all! And the teachers are really motiving (shoutout to my faves -Emma, Alex and Selena) I’m @eringates1979, if you wanna follow along. I also LOVE Melissa Wood Health classes and Sculpt Society. I also found this girl, Rachel Gullotta,  on YouTube I like quite a bit too. I bit the bullet and got an Apple Watch so I can run without lugging my phone and love that it tracks my stats.  The best part of my new routine- how much STRONGER I am, and the endurance I have is shockingly improved! Actually seeing results is pretty cool.

I work out about 30-50 minutes a day 5-6 days a week. Everyday I do something different so a week may look like this:

SUNDAY: Off

MONDAY: Running outside- 3-4 miles or inside Peloton running class

TUESDAY: 30-40 minute Melissa Wood Health class

WEDNESDAY: 30 minute spinning class or Peloton treadmill running class/ 5-10 minute abs or arms class

THURSDAY: 30 minute HIIT or strength/ circuit workout with bands/sliders/weights

FRIDAY: 30 minute Yoga class

SATURDAY: Morning run outside (2-4) miles plus short abs/arms/butt class

As for workout clothes- here are some of my faves! Currently obsessed with the Alo Airlift leggings top left, but also was “Instagram Ad Influenced” into these Landr leggings that are pretty awesome too (thick, so better for fall).

I hope that answered a lot of your questions! If you have faves- clothes, creams, classes– drop them in comments so we can all try!

Some of My Amazon Faves https://elementsofstyleblog.com/some-of-my-amazon-faves/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/some-of-my-amazon-faves/#comments Wed, 11 Aug 2021 17:51:55 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=40548 Amazon may be taking over the world, with a questionable leader at the helm, but let’s admit it- what would we have done this past year without Amazon deliveries? Also, there have been some really SOLID finds at great prices that just can’t be beat. Here are my essentials/ favorite purchases I wanted to share.

Items left to right, top to bottom:

When my greys start showing, this is the BEST quick cover!

Yes, I have a Momeni shop on Amazon (the new rugs will be on there in the fall)- but my favorite doormat is something that is affordable enough to replace a couple times a year when it gets worn out! Classic and well made.

Clear bins help sorting toys and closet contents easier than solid bins you have to pull out to see in or label.

This stain remover really works on wine stains (and other dark stains too!)

I use both this protein powder and collagen powder in my morning smoothie (along with frozen blueberries, half a banana, juice of a lemon, milk and spinach)

OK, these CRZ yoga clothes are really amazing- I heard about them from a few influencers and am SO SO impressed. I bought all these items and LOVE them. The green top is my absolute fave- ordered in three more colors- super supportive! Size down if between sizes though!

These sunnies are LARGE, but super fun!

I bought these covers for all my outdoor furniture and they are perfect!

My new fave jammies for Emma- so stretchy and silky and comfy- love the little ruffle edges too!

We ALWAYS recommend this thick rug pad with rubber bottom- always.

These are my preferred hand weights for Peloton workouts.

This is the baby gate we use at our house- it basically disappears. But you do have to remember to lock it every time you open it!

This three pack of jersey shorts has been a Henry favorite this summer.

The masks I buy for myself and Henry on repeat- individually wrapped so easy to toss in a bag.

These are great temporary blackout or light filtering blinds for when you are waiting for window treatments to come in (so many delays!)

This fold up pool is pretty large and easy to store!

A handheld steamer is a MUST in my business- but also great for quickly steaming dresses and garments too.

These travel wine mugs keep things cool and look cute as well (I got the wood ones).

They also have tumblers with straws for iced coffee of other beverages. Simple and sleek.

This is what we make our smoothies in- SUCH easy cleanup and no need for a separate glass.

Velvet slim hangers for myself and the kids.

This diamond cleaning pen is AWESOME. I always have one to clean my rings and earrings.

I bought this MASSIVE cutting board for our island since our counters stain easier than I thought- it’s pretty and functional!

I store all our wrapping supplies in this bag/box- pockets for bags, ribbon, labels and lots of rolls of paper.

Ahhhh, the best $50 you will ever spend if you have a kid- Henry had (has– he refuses to let it go even though his knees are to his ears when he’s in it) the blue version and I got Emma the pink one and every morning she and Andrew take a “drive” with Oliver. If you drive on Route 16 in Wellesley in the morning you probably have seen them :)

Fashion Friday: My Current Skincare Regimen https://elementsofstyleblog.com/fashion-friday-my-current-skincare-regimen/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/fashion-friday-my-current-skincare-regimen/#comments Fri, 05 Mar 2021 15:18:00 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=40157 I feel so “influencer” sharing this but I have gotten numerous requests from people over the last few weeks whenever I share a video of myself rambling nonsensically in my car :)  I am not one who has a skincare “ritual”- I’m far too busy to be able to dedicate significant time to my skin- but now that I’m 41, I’m taking it a LITTLE more seriously and investing in not only high quality products, but seeing a dermatologist as well.

Yes folks, I got a little Botox 2 weeks ago. Right between the ol’ eyebrows.  I usually only get it in my jaw muscles because I clench SO much that I shattered a filling and have struggled with TMJ since college.  If you are the same,  do not delay-DO THIS. It is LIFE changing. Jaw pain can affect your posture, your sense of well being… lots of things. Botox treatments train the masseter muscle to relax and over time, you will need fewer and fewer treatments as it becomes less active. Anyways, while there I said, go ahead, let’s knock those “11’s” out. No shame in that game. I also finally got a prescription Retinol.  After spending 6 years being pregnant/ trying to get pregnant- I finally can use a strong Retinol!!! YAY!

Other than that I hope to try some lasers soon- I have lots of sun damage from YEARS of sun bathing and being a lifeguard.  But I’m not there quiiiiiiite yet, I want to see what this Retinol does.

Click image for links or see below:

CLEANSING

I love a good exfoliant– this Skinceuticals Micro-Exfoliating Scrub (kindly sent to me by the crew at Bella Sante Wellesley) is AMAZING in texture- love it!  I also love the Tata Harper Resurfacing one.  For gentle, non-gritty cleanser I still love Tammy Fender’s Cleansing Milk (but I’m out).

TREATMENTS

I’m using a few things right now- I just got the iS Clinical Active and so far so good- I use this every other night (when not using my Retinol- which is Rx- but I also found the Drunk Elephant one to be SUPER effective). During the day I use the Skinceuticals CE Ferulic before my sunscreen and moisturizer.

MOISTURE

For daytime I use my La Roche Posay Suncreen serum over the CE Ferulic, and then Skinceuticals Triple Lipid (recommended by my derm).  For nighttime, I use the Augustinus Bader Rich Cream.  So so expensive, but I do really like it and feel glowier when I use it. I also still love Creme de la Mer as well for winter time. I like a really thick nighttime moisturizer!

EYES & LIPS

I have yet to find an eye cream I am obsessed with, and I’ve tried many. This Kiehls does the job as far as moisture goes, but I’m not wowed. So any recommendations are welcome. I do like this little retinol eye stick though! I just picked up this Dior lip scrub/ balm and it’s really nice to use before bed. It kind of dissolves into your lips and makes them feel great.

SPECIAL STUFF

Once in a blue moon I’ll do a mask- usually the Tata Harper Resurfacing or any random sheet mask I pick up.  I also have been loving these Wander eye patches as well for a quick pick me up.  Once in a while when I’m feeling really pale and sad, I’ll add a couple drops of Tan Luxe to my nighttime moisturizer to get a healthy light glow.  I also like to use my gua sha tool in the morning for a few minutes to wake my face up.

Any faves you would like to share? Things that REALLY work for you?

Fashion Friday: All About the Eyes https://elementsofstyleblog.com/fashion-friday-all-about-the-eyes/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/fashion-friday-all-about-the-eyes/#comments Fri, 15 Jan 2021 16:21:43 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=40042

With mask wearing not ending anytime soon, I think a lot of us have saved a decent amount of money on lipgloss. I mean, what’s the point??? With our eyes being the only thing people see right now, I’ve upped my eye makeup game a little bit. And with that, my eye creams and treatments. Below is a round up of some tried and true faves – from eye creams and mascaras to brow pencils and eyeliner (I never use a pencil – always tightline angle brush and wet powder!). I also have a serious concealer addiction, and I’ve tried all of these and liked them.

Let me know your faves in comments!!!

Fashion Friday: Hair Tutorial with Products! https://elementsofstyleblog.com/fashion-friday-hair-tutorial-with-products/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/fashion-friday-hair-tutorial-with-products/#comments Fri, 08 Jan 2021 16:05:02 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=40026

Ok, I finally sucked it up and did an awkward “how I curl my hair” tutorial after hearing requests for it for years. It’s truly not anything magical or unique, but I hope it helps those looking for a way to quickly get loose curls.  I also linked all the products I use below– the mousse I show in the video I actually am unimpressed with, so I linked one I like better :) And I found my curling iron on SUPER sale! I may need to get me a new one- mine has to be at least 10 years old!

Of Note:

  • I looooove the Goop scalp scrub. It makes my hair feel SO clean, but it takes some getting used to.
  • The Navy Haircare shampoo and conditioner is really lovely. I think it helped with stopping my hair from shedding as much post-partum.
  • I hate the smell of the Drybar dry shampoo but it’s SUCH a good mix of a texturizer and dry shampoo, so I just suck it up.
  • The Harry Josh dryer is really pricey but it’s SO good- dried my hair so fast and comes with great attachments and clips for sectionaing

Have a great weekend everyone!

Fashion Friday: Zoom Call Looks to Keep You Comfy But All Business. https://elementsofstyleblog.com/fashion-friday-zoom-call-looks-to-keep-you-comfy-but-all-business/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/fashion-friday-zoom-call-looks-to-keep-you-comfy-but-all-business/#comments Fri, 21 Aug 2020 18:34:43 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=39609

All these Zoom meetings have got me ready to head right to the dermatologist once this pandemic is over (unless there is backyard Botox happening somewhere???) I know a lot of us are working only via Zoom or the like, and still want to look presentable yet be comfy since we are working at home or alone. So today I paired some Zoom outfit ideas (I.e. business up top, couch party below) with some beauty products to help you look your best on screen.

LOOK 1: A rather formal blouse paired with comfy denim, slipper-like loafers and bold earrings.  A matte face with a little flush looks better on screen than shiny and pale skins, so this mattifying powder and liquid blush are faves of mine.

LOOK 2: Seriously cozy joggers hide under the desk while up to a ruffled top, sparkly earrings and cute headband make you look pulled together.  I’ve been feeling super tired (ya know, new baby, work, PANDEMIC) so eye masks and a super full coverage concealer with some illumination is key to not looking totally haggard on Zoom.

LOOK 3: I love this sweater tee- great for now and fall- paired with black denim, leather slides, and of course some statement coin earrings.  Even out your complexion with this full coverage CC cream that is super hydrating and add a little glow with a bronzer.

LOOK 4: White jeans and a sweater is my jam on cooler summer/ early fall days. This cashmere tee is clean and fitted, add this fun scarf to your ponytail or around your neck and since no one will know, sneakers. A simple way to illuminate eyes– this amazing cream shadow and toxin-free mascara (I used both almost every day now)

LOOK 5: Pull on joggers in a fun print will feel like pajamas, so will these furry lined mules, but paired with colored cashmere and a super bold necklace you’ll look ready to take on the world from the waist up :)  When offscreen do some nice masks to plump the skin and did you know blue light from our devices actually does damage the skin? This sunscreen with red algae helps mitigate that!

LOOK 6: My staple sweater blazer (I have about 5) paired with a tunic length cami and bold long necklace can be paired with leggings easily! These new Rothy loafers are so fun AND comfy too. I am not a big lipstick person, but you don’t want your lips looking washed out and dry on screen- this stain topped with this oil based light gloss is natural but defining.
