Admittedly I have NOT designed many yellow rooms in my career – it’s just never been my favorite color historically (yellow paint being one of the hardest colors to get right in my book). The guest suite above was the most yellow space I have photographed I can share- which is not a lot of yellow. But if 2025 was the year I fell back in love with red, 2026 is going to be the year of me and YELLOW. I’m finding myself saving a lot of rooms done in yellow on IG and have a pile of yellow fabrics I’m loving on my desk. All of a sudden I get really excited when a client suggests yellow for a room! So I pulled together some favorite things I’ve found in this tone. All the links can be found HERE.

How do you feel about yellow? Are there other colors you want to try out in 2026 that maybe used to be on your “no thanks” list?

Warming Up https://elementsofstyleblog.com/warming-up/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/warming-up/#comments Mon, 21 Oct 2024 17:53:39 +0000 https://elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=55129 I am so drawn to all warm tones right now – a clear departure from the cooler blues and greys we’ve become accustomed to. Anything leaning more brown, caramel, sienna or plum is calling my name – and retailers seem to agree. There are so many great products launched recently all in this palette, perfect for fall. And while you won’t catch me dead with any seasonal pillows in my house, I do sometimes pop in the occasional seasonal throw (wool plaid or faux fur right now, lighter cotton/linen blend in the summer) and do advocate for adding something velvet during the colder months if you don’t have it year round (which I do).

Some faves right now that I’ve spotted across the interwebs:

For the Love of Scallops. https://elementsofstyleblog.com/for-the-love-of-scallops/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/for-the-love-of-scallops/#comments Mon, 09 May 2022 15:09:04 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=41237

The rule in our office seems to be “if you scallop it, we will buy it”. Right now the market is flooded with adorable scalloped items that mix sweetness with tailored preppiness.  From consoles to lamp shades and bedding- you can’t throw a rock in the design world without hitting something scalloped. And I’m okay with that. Below is a round up of some of my favorite scalloped items- click for links!

The “Coastal Grandmother” Trend https://elementsofstyleblog.com/the-coastal-grandmother-trend/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/the-coastal-grandmother-trend/#comments Wed, 04 May 2022 16:47:04 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=41217

Everyone and their mother (or grandmother, more aptly) is discussing the “Coastal Grandmother” trend these days (I was asked to comment on it for Martha Stewart recently).  Born from the global adoration of the most perfect beach house of all time, Erica Barry’s home in Nancy Meyers’ Something’s Gotta Give.  But I think it’s deeper than just a pretty house- I think it’s a lifestyle people are craving- one of relaxation, simple luxuries, free time, long lunches, farmer’s markets, cold glasses of white wine and cashmere sweaters at a beach picnic. I mean, who WOULDN’T want that?

The aesthetics of “coastal grandma” center around traditional, classic pieces, neutral colors and texture. Think linen, jute, mohair, wool knits, soft prints, antique case goods and grasscloth or raffia accents.  It’s about creating a comfortable, lived in space that is light and bright and NEVER out of style.  It made me think about a project we did a couple years ago that was literally this- a beach house for a grandmother!  So I had to post it again because it’s a great example of this look. Photography by Sarah Winchester

The primary suite with motorized blackout romans and sheer drapes is actual heaven.

This might be one of my favorite shots of all time- that view!

I can so see Erica Barry staying here.

Pale blue grasscloth in the closet and custom millwork everywhere (my dad’s firm was the architect for this house as you may recall)

Also one of my most favorite bathrooms ever- small but oh so stylish!

The family room done in all pale blues and white.

The dining room has such a stunning view as well and is a mix of woven chairs, painted wood and skirted seating.

We did a facelift on the kitchen- replacing the counters and backsplash, painting the cabinetry and adding some modern but beachy counter stools.

Here are some selections

Roundup: Woven Wonders https://elementsofstyleblog.com/roundup-woven-wonders/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/roundup-woven-wonders/#comments Wed, 23 Jun 2021 17:24:22 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=40400

One of my most favorite woven chairs of all time, funnily named “How To Marry A Millionaire” by Peter Dunham’s Hollywood at Home here in a project of ours. Photo by Michael J. Lee.

I love a good woven accent in every space, and right now there are SO MANY good items to choose from!  Word to the wise though, be sure not to use TOO many woven/ rattan/ caned pieces in one space though- it can end up feeling way too tropical or bohemian.  Stick to a couple pieces, or one large piece, and mix it with other styles of furniture.

Here are some favorites- click images for links except the lettered items which are linked below.

Rooms that COVID Brought Back https://elementsofstyleblog.com/rooms-that-covid-brought-back/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/rooms-that-covid-brought-back/#comments Mon, 21 Dec 2020 15:27:24 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=39980 COVID has caused an actual boom in our business.  It sounds terrible to say, but it’s true. We’ve never been busier. Because everyone is forced to stay home/ work from home/ learn from home, people are really seeing their homes, and the faults in their homes, in a new light. And I think that this year of misery will cause people to rethink how they want their homes to function. We all PRAY that this never happens again, but if it does, we all want to be better prepared to be able to have our houses not only provide extra comfort and happiness through design and decor, but most importantly through how it functions for us as well. And that means that some rooms that have gone out of fashion in recent years thanks to the HGTV “open concept” obsession, will be back in favor. Here are some that we anticipate designing more of in 2021:

SEPARATE LIVING AREAS

Yes, an open kitchen/ family room is GREAT for everyday, but when you need to separate for different Zoom calls/meetings, homework, playtime, etc it can be a downright nightmare. Also, having your bedroom be the only retreat for privacy for working from home can mess up your sleep cycle (you know how they tell you your bed should only be for sleeping and…) Open concept means you can see everyone, which – as a mom – is great, but it also means you can see EVERYTHING – messes included. I think we’ll be seeing a little more division between spaces in homes being built.

THE OFFICE

Seldom found in any homes that aren’t borderline palatial, the office is going to make a HUGE comeback. A lot of businesses have figured out that employees can work from home almost as well as in the office, so I think we’ll be seeing more jobs with telecommuting options. Which means that you’ll need a room dedicated to work. Our new house has a small office and I’m pretty excited about it! It’s super important to be able to shut a door and close off “work” at the end of the day. And sitting on your bed working on your computer all day is so bad for your back.

KIDS STUDY AREAS

I think playrooms will have more space sectioned off for desks and homework/study space. Wouldn’t you LOVE to have a space where all the kids papers, books, projects could live that WASN’T the dining room table??? It also helps kids stay focused and not easily distracted by what other members of the family are doing. There’s a landing nook at our new house I can see becoming something like this – it’s TINY, but you don’t need a lot of space, just well planned space.

THE DEN

A room just for YOU.  If you have the luxury of an additional small room, making it a special space to escape to is IDEAL – a modern day “sitting room”, if you will. I know this is a dream for most, but in larger homes I think we’ll be seeing this kind of space pop back up again.

OUTDOOR SPACES/ SUNROOMS

A few folding chairs in the driveway got us through “careful” socializing in 2020, so I think more thoughtful outdoor spaces will be big the next year. Also, swimming pools. SO MANY pools going in around here!

What’s the one thing about your home that COVID brought to your attention, good or bad?

Trend Alert: Faux Sherpa, Shearling & Sheepskin https://elementsofstyleblog.com/trend-alert-faux-sherpa-shearling-sheepskin/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/trend-alert-faux-sherpa-shearling-sheepskin/#comments Mon, 28 Sep 2020 16:27:34 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=39723

Jayson Home’s Siena Sofa, above.

I’ve noticed that there is a HUGE number of designers, stores and magazines showcasing faux sherpa upholstered furniture as of late (and it’s so seasonally appropriate). Mostly on modern frames and accented with wood or brass details, these pieces are both sleek AND cozy. I do wonder about staining/wear in cases of houses with children and pets, but they sure do look like a nice spot to snuggle up with a cup of coffee and read (or binge a Netflix show/scroll instagram). How do you feel about this trend? If it feels like too big of a commitment on a piece of furniture, you can try some pillows or a small ottoman (I actually have a small modern sheepskin ottoman I bought a dozen years ago I still love in my closet!). Also, kids love it- Henry has a sherpa beanbag he sometimes asks to sleep in!

Warming Up Your Neutrals https://elementsofstyleblog.com/warming-up-your-neutrals/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/warming-up-your-neutrals/#comments Mon, 20 Jan 2020 18:13:43 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=39029

Image by Michael J. Lee for Elements of Family Style.

It’s clear that for 2020 the go-to neutral is much warmer than what we’ve been seeing the past five years. I, for one, am delighted. I always find warm neutrals to feel much more livable and more expensive feeling than colder greys. Warmer woods, natural materials like jute and linen, and brass all are wonderful accents to have in any home- and don’t feel as old-fashioned as you may think. I think my living room is a good example of this. The walls are Benjamin Moore Winds Breath (the perfect pale color in between grey and beige), the woven roman shades add nice natural texture (similar here).  The natural leather chair with brass, brass window hardware and antique gilt frame all add a deeper tone of neutral, but it’s balanced by the ivory drapes and white coffee table top.  And judging by the comments on Instagram over the weekend, I think that warm toned Persian-style rugs are going to be really hip now, as well (I sourced this brown one from Linda’s Barn on Etsy and it’s awesome).

Some fresh new items for spring (even though it’s the dead of winter) that can help you bring a little neutral warmth to your space. Click images for links.

I also did a quick SAG red carpet recap on Insta Stories today!

I love some good caning accents and furniture pieces. It’s a material with a lot of history and adds texture to any space. The pattern itself is great on wallpaper and textiles too! So here is a round up of my favorite current offerings- from French antiques to more modern, sleek styles.

Color Crush: Aubergine + Light Blue https://elementsofstyleblog.com/color-crush-aubergine-light-blue/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/color-crush-aubergine-light-blue/#comments Wed, 10 Oct 2018 15:45:19 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=36945

These two colors are seemingly disparate, but a fantastic and unique combination to use in a space (and one I especially love this time of year). I personally am not a purple girl, it’s the color I use least I’d guess, but in this case I do quite enjoy it!  I prefer a deep plummy, eggplant tone with undercurrents of red in it paired with a light blue that has a smidge of green in it (think robin’s egg).  This room below by Jeffrey Bilhuber is the exact right tones:

Too cool or bright of a purple can look really teeny-bopper and harsh, while too cool a blue can look too sweet.  So you have to get these tones just right for this combination to work.  You can even try to go super dark on the aubergine and in a high gloss paint finish, like the room below, to make it extra dramatic and glamorous.

Here are some simple suggestions on how to pair these two colors together in various places int he home! (To be honest, this post was inspired by my body wash- below- while in the shower last night!)

Entry: paint (maybe door color?) // rug

Living Room: chair // side table

Bedroom: duvet // pillow

Powder Room: wallpaper // paint (vanity or trim?)

Walls: grasscloth // art

Bathroom: body wash (love this for fall- smells so good) // towels

Tabletop: plates // napkins

Anywhere: velvet pillow // print pillow

Oh and P.S., this combo work in fashion too :)

Trend Alert: Rattan, Wicker & Wovens https://elementsofstyleblog.com/trend-alert-rattan-wicker-wovens/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/trend-alert-rattan-wicker-wovens/#comments Wed, 22 Aug 2018 15:10:47 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=36650 This really is not breaking news in any sort of manner, but rather a reminder that texture, especially through natural materials like rattan, wicker and wovens is an essential part of making a room feel interesting and layered.  I think a lot of people associate wicker with old lady outdoor patio furniture and rattan with boho/California style only.  But you can work these materials into any kind of room- be it modern, traditional, beachy, country or anything in between.

This new collection above by Sarah Bartholomew for Pottery Barn is chock full of woven goodness!

Here are some great examples of woven items I love:

An Unexpected Palette https://elementsofstyleblog.com/an-unexpected-palette/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/an-unexpected-palette/#comments Mon, 09 Jul 2018 14:34:06 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=36526 I saw this room on Instagram last night (designed by Allison Elebash) and found the palette of medium/ light blue and blush to be really unexpected in a family space. I would typically think of these tones as too sweet and baby-ish to pair together in an adult space, but it TOTALLY works and looks fresh and interesting!  The painting by Sally King Benedict certainly adds some grown up funkiness, and the woven textures of the sofa ground everything.

So I started thinking how great this mix would be in a guest room or beach house bedroom.   I saw this great rug from West Elm and started with that as the base and then built from there with layers of blush and blue.  This look could also work great for a tween/teen room or a nursery– but totally stands on its own for a grown up too!  By using softer colors like this in combination with texture and clean, modern lines you help soften the overall feel of the space.

A Bit of Blue https://elementsofstyleblog.com/a-bit-of-blue/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/a-bit-of-blue/#comments Wed, 16 May 2018 15:57:17 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=36267 There is an old design adage that all rooms need a little black in them.  I’m starting to feel that way about blue.  I mean, I’v never met a room that didn’t benefit from a little blue and white pottery!  We’re installing a house this month that we designed completely in blue and white (little sneak pics from my Insta)– from the palest light blue to dark navy and every iteration of blue in between!

Here are some fun ways to use blue in your home in either a big or tiny way.

Fashion Vs. Interiors: Spring Trends with Nordstrom https://elementsofstyleblog.com/fashion-vs-interiors-spring-trends-nordstrom/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/fashion-vs-interiors-spring-trends-nordstrom/#comments Wed, 28 Feb 2018 15:34:41 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=35909 I haven’t done one of these posts in a while, but when Nordstrom reached out about partnering on a spring trends post, I thought it would be the perfect time to finally bring this kind of post back!  I went through some interiors trends and coordinated them with great items from Nordstrom that echo the sentiment- proof positive that fashion and interiors are linked arm in arm!

Blue Chinoiserie Paper OR Mules?

You’ll notice SO many floral and chinoiserie patterns in both homes and clothing and accessories.  It’s THE pattern to use right now!

A chartreuse feminine sofa OR dress?

This modern, edgy shade of yellow is going to big big this spring. Certainly not for all complexions or rooms, but it adds such a happy punch of color to your home or outfit. (Side note- this sofa is still for sale! Email us if interested katie@eringatesdesign.com)

Country Linen Striped Chairs or Dress?

The simple patterns and textures of classic “country style” are being used again in so many spaces.  Also a great look for easy, breezy summer dresses.

BEE WALLPAPER OR DESIGNER BAG?

I have always adored this bee patterned wallpaper and now see that Gucci is using bees everywhere this spring!

BLUSH AS A MODERN NEUTRAL- WALLS OR TRENCH?

Dusty blush is the new beige.  From walls (try Benjamin Moore Melted Ice Cream) to sofas, leather jackets to trench coats, it’s the go-with-everything color that is anything but bland.

Graphic Black and White Stripes- Rug or Dress?

Black and white stripes will never, ever go out of style. EVER. In both decorating and fashion.  A worth investment in either department.

LIGHT GREEN-GREY CABINETS or LEATHER TOTE?

Another “new neutral”– this slightly green grey tone is an unexpected pick instead of the basic grey or beige tone for basics like cabinetry, walls or an everyday leather bag.

TASSEL EARRINGS or HARDWARE?

Tassels are the best.  I love wearing my zillion pairs of earrings and using them on everything from pillows to pulls!  Put a tassel on it and I’ll buy it!

NATURAL WOVEN RUG OR CLUTCH?

Jute rugs are the blue jeans of a room– and in springtime I like to use them everywhere as they have such a summery, light feel.  I also always have a woven natural clutch on hand for spring and summer dressing– goes with everything and doesn’t break the bank!

GREEN FLORAL PAPER OR BLOUSE?

Yup, more florals! Bring ’em on!  You need some for your closet and your home. Get on it. :)

RED AND AQUA RUG or BATHING SUIT?

We’ve seen a lot of neutral rugs in this style as of late, and I think the more saturated, red versions will become more popular again.  The organic patterns translate really well into swimwear!

Pale Blue Braided Rug or Espadrille?

Braided rugs are synonymous with country decor, but they are making a comeback in more modern homes.  The braided detail is subtle and comfortable underfoot– just like these adorable espadrilles are! (Side note: LOVE this grey-blue suede!)

OLIVE GREEN WALLS or TOP?

This shade of green is BIG right now (I also love it paired with the dusty blue from above).  It looks amazing against white marble in a bath or kitchen or with white jeans in an outfit (and a faux tan and gold accessories look great with it too!)

WHITE BONE HARDWARE OR CUFF?

Both of these items would dress up whatever you pair them with– a vanity or basic tee and jeans.

Trend Watch: Fringe Trim (Yay or Nay?) https://elementsofstyleblog.com/trend-watch-fringe-trim-yay-nay/ https://elementsofstyleblog.com/trend-watch-fringe-trim-yay-nay/#comments Wed, 07 Feb 2018 14:58:59 +0000 https://www.elementsofstyleblog.com/?p=35804 The other day I was trying to finish up my pillow scheme for my “formal” living room and a CRAZY idea popped into my head. Should I use some brush fringe on one pair of pillows?  I nearly stopped dead in my tracks at the fact that I was even entertaining that thought. Five years ago- heck, one year ago, I would have told you brush fringe and ANY fringe really, was a design no-no and made a face.

But here we are.  Bullion and brush fringe is making a comeback. It’s kind of like shoulder pads being revamped- super  80’s and 90’s, looks good on 1% of people/rooms but most will hate that it’s back (I, for one, have a deep disdain for shoulder pads). But it’s so interesting to me how trends recycle in this way.  Things you thought you hated slowly become something you think is cool again.

I mean, I’m not mad at this room. It’s fun. It’s not something I personally would do in my current living room, but I like it in someone else’s!

And lets look at Tory Burch’s homes/offices– girlfriend LOOOOOOVES her some bullion fringe sofas. And can pull it off.

I guess these kinds of sofas really work well in zillion dollar New York brownstones with grand scale so they don’t feel overwhelming. I remember being SO obsessed with this image of her boys playing on it.  Very Wes Anderson.

In her Paris store there is a tone on tone one which is WAY easier to get behind than contrast fringe.

Aerin Lauder also has a skirted table with some fringe in one of her homes…

Jeffrey Bilhuber, genius decorator extraordinaire, did this room.

Paired with some modern accents it’s kind of funky and fun and less stuffy.

I mean, I actually really like it on this chaise.

Liv Tyler on her pink fringe trimmed sofa.

This banquette is super chic and modern.

I mean, Jonathan Adler is offering sofas and chairs with bullion fringe now! And so is One Kings Lane. So are we on board??? Maybe just on a pillow? Or do you absolutely HATE this trend?
